The St. Louis University Billikens men’s basketball team on Monday took down Southern Utah 88-76 to mark Travis Ford’s first victory as head coach.

Ford joined The Press Box on Tuesday to discuss the victory and look ahead to the rest of the season.

Read some excerpts and listen to the complete conversation (starts at the 7:55 mark) below:

On SLU’s win over Southern Utah:

“We were totally out of our element (against Ball State in the opener) for whatever reason, for everything we’d worked out. Guys were really struggling and hesitant in our ball movement, very hesitant in running our plays…We worked on the fundamentals of our offense Saturday, moving the ball quickly, spacing, cutting hard, screening hard, getting the ball inside. And I’m proud of the team for taking what we worked on and doing a much better job of it.”

“I felt overall…other than free throw shooting and a few loose balls and breakdowns defensively…we played pretty well for our basketball team.”

On treating the current players, many of who Ford didn’t recruit, as his own players:

“I love these kids. They’ve accepted me. They’ve accepted a new approach. It’s not come easy…but they’ve accepted me. I want in for these young men. I’ve just appreciated how they’ve accepted me.”
