The Missouri Football Players’ Strike: Who Is Jonathan Butler?
The Missouri football team is on the front page of major websites across the country, and we’re not just talking about sports websites.
CNN. Fox News. The New York Times.
Type in Missouri football in a search engine, and you’re not going to get much about the Mississippi State game that happened just four days ago. You’re going to get stories on the team, President Tim Wolfe, Gary Pinkel, Athletic Director Mack Rhoades, and Jonathan Butler.

At the University of Missouri-Columbia, many students and administrators know Jonathan Butler as a campus leader.
Around the country, however, he is known as the man at the center of the picture tweeted out by the Missouri football team Saturday night as they announced that they are boycotting all football activities.
And he is the man Gary Pinkel and Mack Rhoades cited when expressing their support for the players’ boycott:
“Today, Sunday, there will be no football practice or formal team activities,” said Pinkel and Rhoades. “Our focus right now is on the health of Jonathan Butler, the concerns of our student-athletes and working with our community to address this serious issue. After meeting with the team this morning, it is clear they do not plan to return to practice until Jonathan resumes eating.
