Why Cardinals are taking Martinez to arbitration over small sum

St. Louis Cardinals GM John Mozeliak announced earlier this month the team expected to head to arbitration with rising star pitcher Carlos Martinez over a salary dispute of roughly $350,000.

Earlier this month, the Cardinals and Martinez both filed their arbitration numbers. The Cardinals offered $3.9 million while Martinez’s representatives filed at $4.25 million.

If the Cardinals go through with their plans (Michael Wacha is also scheduled for a hearing), it would be the first time since 1999 the team takes someone to an arbitration hearing.

Derrick Goold, Ben Frederickson and Benjamin Hochman on The Writers’ Block discussed why the Cardinals would risk upsetting and alienating Martinez over such a relatively small amount.
