TJ Crockett, a senior guard for the University City boys basketball team, is this week’s recipient of the 590 The Fan High School Athlete of the Week award.
Crockett put together a dynamite pair of games this past week posting 57 points, 14 rebounds, 9 assists, and 7 steals.
“He’s the person I can call and make sure the guys are where they need to be. Most kids take a back seat after they sign, this kid never took a back seat, he just kept working hard. It’s really a coaches dream to be able to coach a kid like this,” University City head coach Hurlie Cozart said.
Crockett attributes his love for the game to two very influential men in his life, his dad and Lebron James.
“My dad, it wore off on me and made me want to play hard, and then my favorite player Lebron James made me look up to him, he’s a good role model,” Crockett said.
The 6’2″ guard is signed to play collegiate ball at Lindenwood and his teammates say he’s important to them both on and off the court.
“Off the court he’s dedicated to school, that’s all he cares about and talks about. He’s really looking forward to going to Lindenwood. He’s real goofy, he’s a high spirit, he’s always happy. He’s probably the goofiest person you’ll ever meet, but he’s nice, real nice,” Wallace Simmons said.
“I love this team. I love this program. I love playing for the coaches. I love my principle and teachers. I love everything about this school,” Crockett said.
The Lions are 6-11-1 on the season and are next in action against Whitfield on Tuesday, February 7.
