Hall of Fame baseball writer and St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Rick Hummel joined The Ryan Kelley Morning After on Wednesday to discuss some Cardinals topics ahead of the team’s day game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Read some excerpts and listen to the full interview below:

On the effectiveness of Mike Leake early in the season:

“He’s trust some of his other pitches. He’s got more weapons with which to deal. And the defense has been better for him compared to last year. I’d like to see the offense help him a lot.”

On concerns over Oh, who has struggled a bit early:

“Mike Matheny was talking about possibly leaving his slider up a bit. He pitched well last night. His fielding wasn’t that good.”

Do you think we’ll continue to see Greg Garcia at third base?

“I think third base is a position in transition. Garcia has certainly thrown his name into the third base hopper. I don’t know if he’s the answer for the rest of the year but he’s the answer for any particular day.”

Do you think Dexter Fowler is starting to come around?

“Little bit. Like to see him walk more. That’s what he did with the Cubs last year. I see him coming around. But just as he’s starting to come around, Diaz has been blanked the last five or six game.”
