Rick “The Commish” Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch joined The Press Box from Jupiter to discuss a number of Cardinals topics, including the starting rotation, the third base battle between Gyorko and Peralta and Matt Adams possibly seeing time in left field.
Read some excerpts and listen to the complete interview below:
Who do you see making the roster between Jose Martinez and Tommy Pham at this point?
“Martinez is hitting almost .400 (for most of the spring). Pham is hitting about .200. I think they’d be more comfortable (with Pham’s skills in the outfield than Martinez’s limited skills). If it came to who had the better spring, there’s no contest there. Martinez has had the better spring. But in the long run, Pham probably does them more good.”
What are you seeing with Dexter Fowler?
“He was hitting .460. He’s getting on base a lot, he’s working a lot of long counts. This is precisely why they signed is to be that leadoff guy who starts the game off by seeing eight or 10 pitches, whether he gets on or not. And he has been getting on.”
On third base playing time:
“I guess Peralta has the edge…just because he’s played more third base than Gyorko. He’s a little better defender than Gyorko. (Gyorko clearly has more power). I think Peralta would have to stumble badly the next two weeks not to be the Opening Day third baseman. That doesn’t mean he’s going to be the starting third baseman on May 1.”
