Jose Oquendo Returns To Cardinals In Coaching Staff Shakeup

Longtime St. Louis Cardinals third-base coach, Jose Oquendo will return to the team and serve in the same role the team announced Monday. Third-base coach Mike Shildt will shift over to serve as Mike Matheny’s bench coach.

The team also announced the addition of former Cardinal Willie McGee, whose specific role is pending on other moves the team makes. For the time being McGee will work with the outfield group and the entire team on base running.

Oquendo’s return comes after the 54-year-old took a leave of absence at the start of the 2016 season for knee replacement surgery. McGee has served as a special assistant to the general manager and has worked with players as a guest coach during Spring Training over the past three seasons.
