insideSTL.com Job Opportunities And Internships...Plus The Creation of A New Politics Section
By Tim McKernan Tuesday, September 09, 2008

insideSTL.com Web Operations & Marketing Job Opportunity

As mentioned last week on Friday in Timmy's Tidbits, insideSTL.com is looking to hire a new assistant to our Vice President of Web Operations, Justin Boyd. The ideal candidate would also serve as the head of our marketing and promotions.

Personally, knowing the details of the job, I think this position is perfect for someone either still in school or just out of school who is looking to work in IT...and has their shit together enough to head up the events we host throughout the year.

I'll reiterate what I said on Friday: this is a job. While the company may have been founded on grabass...and while insideSTL.com may represent something(s) you thoroughly enjoy, it is a business. Therefore, if you're motive for working here is to chase skirt, I suggest you don't bother applying.

However, if you are interested in an opportunity to play a role in building and creating what insideSTL.com looks like each day, developing new aspects of the site, and organizing Girls Next Door parties and insideSTL.com Happy Hours, email your resume to me at tmckernan@insidestl.com.

We received a number of resumes from last week's column, but before beginning the interviewing process, I want to get the word out there in a headline...as opposed to burying it in Timmy's Tidbits.

insideSTL.com Internship

We were incredibly fortunate this summer to have Andrew Van Gorden interning for us at insideSTL.com. However, Andy had to go back to the University of Indiana a few weeks ago, so now there's an opportunity for another intern to come in to fill his spot.

If you or someone you know would like to earn credit hours by interning at insideSTL.com, email me at tmckernan@insidestl.com.

Ballsy...But Let's Take A Chance: An insideSTL.com Politics Section...At Least Through Election Day

I've only been able to vote since 1996, so it's not like I've been able to partake in a whole lot of elections, but I do know this upcoming November is most likely going to be unlike anything I've ever experienced...and most likely anything you've ever experienced.

We've spent hours on the topic on The ITD Morning After...and you can't go more than a few threads on the insideSTL.com message board without running into a political thread.

So, I'd like to see...and there's no guarantee it'll work out (see Cougars Next Door)...if we can get an insideSTL.com Politics section going starting in less than two weeks.

Let me lay out the master plan:

-I'm a liberal. I know that's a bad word in most parts of this city, but I think it's important to have full disclosure.

-However, I want to have both sides represented, so ideally, we "hire" two conservatives, two liberals, and one legitimate independent...and I'm not talking about one of those people who claim to be independent but it's incredibly clear which way they really lean.

-I put quotation marks around the word *hire,* because we're not going to be paying the columnists. We're essentially throwing this section together, meaning it's there for the purpose of readership and not to generate revenue. Therefore, we won't be selling it to advertisers...at least that's not the plan. Either way, just to make it clear, these will be unpaid positions. You'll be writing for the love of the game.

-If you're interested in writing for the new section, please submit a small bio and a sample column to me at tmckernan@insidestl.com. I realize this is going to lead to some heated discussions, but hopefully civil discourse will eventually prevail. I know it won't, but let's just say it will...and then those of us not planning on attacking the other side with venom over the next 57 days can sit back and watch the car crash in the comments section.

Think about this for a second. If Obama wins, white supremacy group such as skin head, the KKK etc. who will undoubtably view him as public enemy #1 and call for his head will be scrutinized by a multi-billion dollar agency as national security threats. These people are so consumed by anger that they can't help but be complete idiots and will not be able to resist the temptation to threaten him. It is possible that a side benefit to the Obama Presidency will be a wholesale dismantling of the white supremacy movement in the US.

Just a thought.....
