0 For Cardinals, 0 For Rams, 0 For Blues, 0 For Missouri
October 12th
through October 18th will have to go down as one of the worst week's ever in St. Louis sports.
The Cardinals' performance alone puts it in the running, but then when you combine the hideous operation the Rams run, the Blues' shocking mess Thursday and Saturday, and Missouri blowing it in the 4th Quarter against Nebraska Thursday, you're talking about an all out disastrous week.
Thank all that is holy that we don't do a real sports talk show, because I have no idea what the fuck we'd be talking about for three hours in a couple of weeks.
Cardinal Collapse
The biggest shame of the whole thing is that ownership and management committed to the club once they saw the team had a real chance...and then the team played horribly from September 11th until the final out Saturday night.
I seriously don't get how that happened.
And, by that I mean...I know what the stats were...but I don't know why they went from so dominant to so average...or bad...so quickly.
The Ryan Franklin and Joel Pineiro collapses have historical data to explain their issues in
September and October. But, the horrific offense is inexplicable.
There's no excuse for a team with the kind of bats that the Cardinals have to score a grand total of six runs in the NLDS.
Honestly, I'm just exhausted by it all.
At least in 2004 when the Cardinals didn't show up against the Red Sox, there were a few understandable contributors (Sox were red hot after the four game comeback against the Yankees, Cardinals were dead tired after getting in late following the Game 7 against the Astros, and Chris Carpenter was out). This year, everyone was healthy. They had the MVP. A huge bat behind him. Two Cy Young frontrunners. And, Gold Glove candidates all over the field.
The loss Thursday night in Game 2 was one of the most heartbreaking in Cardinal history. No overstatement there. It was devastating. And, the sweep finishes off one of the greatest underachieving months in the organization's history.
The 2009 Cardinals will be forgotten in a few years, which is a shame, because six weeks ago, they looked to be unforgettable.
