It Doesn't Matter What Happens At Arrowhead Saturday...The 2008 Missouri Tigers Are A Giant Disappointment
By Tim McKernan Monday, December 01, 2008

I was shocked to see the Missouri-Kansas spread at 14 plus points going into Saturday's game at Arrowhead Stadium.

I thought it was high...not because I thought KU was really any good, but mainly because I just didn't think the 2008 Missouri Tigers were very good.

The very thing that made me wonder about Missouri's potential in August after the Illinois game was the exact weakness that killed them against Kansas. The defense---specifically the blown coverages in the secondary---were there from the 1st Quarter against Illinois at The Dome to the 4th Quarter against Kansas at Arrowhead.

Here's what I wrote on September 2nd following the win against the Illini:

"I was exchanging text messages with insideSTL.com's STL Missouri Tigers' writer Gabe De Armond throughout Saturday's game...and after Saturday's game...and the theme was pretty consistent: I was surprised by how terrible the Missouri secondary looked...So, walking out of the Dome after the 52-42 victory, I told the "Colonel' Gabe De Armond and some of my friends how concerned I was after watching that game."

The concern back in August was justified throughout the season.

I'd like to know how---seriously, just how---the Missouri football team could go through the most anticipated season in decades without addressing a way to combat blown coverages in the secondary.

Whether it was Juice Williams going John Elway at The Dome, Zac Robinson enjoying having 2 wide open receivers in the endzone in October, or Todd Reesing being able to heave wounded ducks in the air as the "great" Justin Garrett chases after another receiver he's allowed past him...this problem plagued what was supposed to be a great team during what was supposed to be a great team.

Well...

...this wasn't a great team.

And, I don't give a damn what happens Saturday at Arrowhead, this wasn't a great season.

Period.

If anything, if Missouri were to somehow beat Oklahoma, it would scream just how much potential they pissed away in 2008.

The reality as it sits right now: Missouri has 9 wins. 3 of those schools will be going to bowls, and 2 of them are Nevada and Buffalo. Just like Kansas took advantage of a crap schedule in 2007 to make their run, I say with great confidence that if Missouri had KU's 2008 schedule, the Tigers wouldn't be the 2008 Big 12 North Champions.

There's only one team in the country who can say it's had more of a disappointing season than Missouri, and that's the preseason #1 Georgia. Otherwise, the 2008 Missouri Tigers would take the cake as the team that shit the bed more than any other team in the country.

Obviously, the defense blew it this year. I have no idea what happened, because this defense was legitimately outstanding by the end of the 2007 season. But, with 10 of 11 starters back, they were terrible in 2008.

However, this isn't all on the defense.

Danario Alexander had critical drops throughout the season...including at the end of the game Saturday. The offensive line, which Gary Pinkel called the best he's had while at Missouri, left Daniel running for his life in the October losses. And, Daniel himself made uncharacteristically poor throws and decisions that led to a season that didn't live up to expectations.

But, the Missouri offense still was not only fun to watch, it was one of the best in the country. Therefore, the disappointment that is a 9-3 season with only one legitimately good win (at Nebraska) is on the defense and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

Just how many times did Missouri fans watch an opposing wide receiver go streaking down the field in shock, because he was so damn wide open? How many times did we see a quarterback have 10 seconds to scan the field and find a receiver? And, how many times did Justin Garrett get burned for a huge gain...if not a touchdown?

But, to me, Garrett's inability to cover receivers throughout the season screams to Eberflus to switch up the roles between Garrett and William Moore. Moore, who cost himself in the NFL Draft dearly---unfortunately---by returning for a bad senior season, was sent on blitzes throughout the season...leaving Garrett to get worked over in the secondary. There was one game this season in which Moore was left back in coverage moreso than sent on the blitz...and that was the shutout versus Colorado. Other than that, opposing quarterbacks were able to feast on the Tiger secondary with the uncreative blitz packages that exposed Garrett and overmatched corners.

When the Tigers called a suspiciously conservative gameplan against Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game last year, it drove me up the wall...not just because Missouri went to San Antonio with a different approach than the one that got them there, but because opportunities to play for a National Championship are so very rare...especially with this asinine system that determines #1 and #2.

Well, applying that same approach to the 2008 season, I now have to say the performance of the defense and coordinator Matt Eberflus this season has played *the* major role in the 2008 Missouri Tigers going from a team that captivated the state and intrigued the nation to, quite possibly, one that won't even finish in the Top 25.

Don't give me the b-s about how this is much better than the 80's and 90's. Is that line going to be used every year Missouri fails to seize great opportunity?

This team had the talent to do amazing things this year, and I don't think many fans would've told you at the start of the season that a 3 loss campaign---including one of those losses being to a 6-6 Kansas team---that they'd be happy...especially when you looked at how favorable the schedule laid out.

I hope like hell a handful of  Internet powernerds get to show up here in 6 days after a Missouri upset versus Oklahoma and tell me how wrong I was about the 2008 Tigers.

The thing is...a win versus OU doesn't change my mind.

This team was eliminated fom the National Championship picture by halftime of the Texas game in mid-October. They had to escape at Baylor. And, they lost to an average, at best, Kansas team.

In August, Missouri fans had real hopes of spending the first week of January in Miami playing for a National Championship. In December, Missouri fans hope to avoid Shreveport.

I have been a Tiger fan since 76 no doubt been through plenty of hell with this program. I am not going to make excuses but would like to know why any true Tiger fan would thank we where a true contender for the NC. Why does one 12-2 season all of the sudden say we will challenge for the NC next year. I like to hope we will but what reality do you base that on. I hope that as GP continues to build this program that we will grow into the kind of program that can contend for the NC. We have had one good season and now another good follow up. Yes the loss to the gayhawks will sting all winter. When will you and your media buddies stop talking out of your ass about the NC. To be a program like UF or UT or OU you have to build and build it does not happen after one 12-2 season. We will have to continue to play at a high level in order to get recruits to come to MU. Games like KU and OSU will not help neither will media talking shit. We have the players in place for a great offense now we need to upgrade or D. That will start if Eberflus takes a job elsewhere and we get a new D cordinator. While Jason Garret has been burnt all year I think the scheme and play calling are more of the issue. The facts or simple TM it takes time to build a program. If you look at the progress we made then we are on the right track but must continue to make the next step upward. It will be a miracle for us to beat OU sat. Our next step in the progression of this team is to win the Big 12 then start talking about the NC. No excuses TM just reality it takes time to climb the mountain. At least we making steps in the that direction.

Calling the season a complete disappointment is a tad strong, Tim. I tend to think of it more as a let down.

IMO, if the Tigers pull out a miracle this week, the season, in whole, was a great success marred with a few painful points. Still, MU getting to a BCS bowl would be a great achievement. It has to be recognized as such.

I know... you say that means if they win, it signifies that they underperformed throughout the year. Bottom line: It's tough to win National Championships, which is why so few of programs do it. So, win Saturday, and all will be forgiven.

Okay, that being said, OU will probably destroy MU, and the Tigers will end up 9-4 playing in the Alamo Bowl. Not the ending any of us anticipated. Yes, that would be deflating, but it happens in college football. Building a program is difficult, and I still see this season -- in the grand scheme of things -- as a move forward. The team has won the North two years in a row (forget all the tie BS, they won it). That's an accomplishment, no matter how down the North is. Now, Gary needs to continue to recruit better and make adjustments. He has throughout his tenure. Maybe, in a few years, rather than having these letdowns, MU will be able to get to that next level... the level we thought they were at this year, but were proven wrong.

I would agree that a complete disappointment is a tad strong. I believe an enormous let down both on defense and offense is a better way to describe it. Our offense has been a big let down in every important game with huge turn overs and questionable play calling in tight games. Its true that Gettis and Bridges couldn't cover a corpse but this team has flaws all over the place. On the plus side we did win 9 games, which wouldn't even seem possible 10 years ago.

I don't care if they went 11-1. They lost to the f-ing chickenhawks, enough said! Season = HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT!!!

By grifter @ Monday, December 01, 2008 11:14 AM
if finishing tied with a shitty nebraska team for first place in the pathetic big 12 north is what you were lookin' for, then sure, the season isn't a total waste. having said that, mu didn't beat a ranked opponent all year and they shit their pants in every big game they played. don't be fooled, this is the same mu team we're used to seeing: same shit, different year.

By BfromV @ Monday, December 01, 2008 11:33 AM
Well, that being said, if some of you claim that this is a total waste, then what? Should Pinkel go? Should the coordinator go? What do you do next?

I tend think you need to have a little perspective, rather than flying off the handle. Sure, I'm not happy, but the season isn't a complete disappointment.

By grifter @ Monday, December 01, 2008 12:17 PM
true, mu didn't have a 4-7 season or anything like that (which i can appreciate), and i like pinkel/the general direction the team is going, but shouldn't things have progressed a little bit more than being big 12 north co-champs and staring down another mediocre bowl game? how many more years, if it ever happens, until mu gets over the hump and can actually play with/BEAT a tex or ou, etc.? maybe if expectations (my own included) weren't so high early-on, i'd be able to accept that this season wasn't wasted.

By BfromV @ Monday, December 01, 2008 1:29 PM
Gabe DeArmond has said it himself. Missouri will NEVER be an OU or UT. Never. We don't have the tradition, and our ties to Texas high schools aren't as strong as those programs. But I'd be okay with the Tigers being the power in the North (which they are) and competing/upsetting a South team in the championship game every once in a while. We're not quite there YET. But I think we can be.

By mrkid @ Monday, December 01, 2008 2:20 PM
If your expectation was contention for a national championship, I can see why this season would be a huge disappointment.

But I think that expecting to contend for a national championship was not very realistic.

In particular, I would argue about the season being a disappointment if they (VERY unlikely) beat Oklahoma next week. I think a Big 12 Championship and a BCS bowl would make this 10-3 (before the bowl) season a BETTER one than last year's 11-2 (before bowl) season. I think 1 win over a top 5 OU trumps a home loss to a top 15 team and a (painful) loss to KU.

By jakehandley88 @ Monday, December 01, 2008 2:32 PM
Anyone trying to say that this season was not a huge disapointment is just trying to be contrary for the sake of being contrary...

I would challege any reasonable person to tell me that the majority of Mizzou fans didnt believe that the team had at the least a chance to compete for the national championship... A chance, not that they were likely too win...

So considering that the team did not even get close to contending does make it a huge disappointment...

That doesn't mean they are bad, in fact I believe Mizzou has a chance to be a program that will consistently be in the top 15 and that's miraculous considering where they've been. We should be happier then pigs in s@#$ that we have that type of program - Who would have ever imagined that would happen... Pinkle is not a big game winner but he'll recruit well and have a successful program...

I could not agree more Tim. We have to quit being content with dissapointments. We have grown to accept the fact that we will never be able to compete with the big boys. Pinkel is being paid big time bucks...we deserve better. What is his record against the teams that count?... KS, OK, and TX? Not very good and it will be worse after Saturday. Maybe after this year we can get back to playing "real" football instead of lining up 10 yards behind center. A couple of times I thought Chase was actually going to take a snap under center, but NOOOOOOOOO. Does MU think that it is illegal for the qb to line up over center? How about lining up in the shotgun 8 yards deep in the end zone...that worked out well didn't it coach.
Hell even Reesing did it!!!

And how about those "yellow" jerseys? Hopefully they were burned in Arrowhead's parking lot after the game. And no don't tell me that they were "gold", Gold is the color of the "M" on the helmets, not the "yellow" that they wore Saturday.

By brianh @ Monday, December 01, 2008 3:27 PM
The disappointment is Pinkel. Mizzou is paying the third most money for the sixth best coach in the Big 12. What incredibly poor timing for the raise.

Hiis game day preperation stinks. He can't adjust to changing game situations and can't get his team to match the opponent's intensity.

His stuborness will continue to cost Mizzou. He destroyed Brad Smith's senior season. He won't fire Eberflus. He won't put in a jumbo short yardage package because "That's not the way we do things." Not good enough.

And I can't stand that stupid visor. Who are you? Stoops and Spurrier? The last two weeks he has been bundled up like the Michelen Man with that ridiculous puffy coat but he's still wearing a hat without a top. Get a real hat if you're so frickin cold.

By TC @ Monday, December 01, 2008 4:01 PM
Brian H - you need to start watching these games, before you make anymore stupid statements.

never prepared? we don't match the opponent's intensity? What the fuck games have you been watching for two years. MIZZOU comes out prepared better than most any team in the country... They hit harder, run faster and are less penalized than every team they face (save for the occasional game against OU).

Yes, they ocassionaly play bad... they've only lost a couple of bad games the past few years. Name one other team in the nation that hasn't lost at least 2-3 games they shouldn't have... I'm waiting. Even USC, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas have lost some really bad games the past two years. That's the way it is in college football now.

And this year is not a complete bust and dissapointment yet! When your goal for a Big 12 championship and BCS bowl birth is right in front of you, what they hell do have to be dissapointed about?

People that are either writing articles, or posting comments, need to take a deep breath. Take a chill pill. Stop using your emotion so carelessly, and enjoy the facts: MU is 21-5 the last two years... they've won back-to-back Big 12 North Titles... they've got exciting playmakers and and they take full advantage of it. They've shifted the power in the North due to stronger recrutiing, and they're beating every last breath these opponents have. Avg Score against North Division foes the past two years: 45-18.

To build a program to national prominance takes decades. Along that road there are peaks and valleys but as long as the general trend is going in the right direction it is progress.
I'm a Mizzou grad and have been a fan forever. I agree this season has been VERY disappointing. That being said, the program is progressing. Next year will probably be viewed as a step back because our record may not be as good as this, but if we can again be a team that is nationally recognized and continue to beat the teams we should beat then it will continue the progress.
You have to think we are bringing in better recruits now than we did 3 and 4 years ago so by that rationale our team should be better in the upcoming years.

By bastardilla @ Monday, December 01, 2008 6:03 PM
geez some people have unrealistic expectations. there are 66 bcs schools, and 119 FBS programs. each one would like to win the national title every year. maybe 20 or so think they actually have a shot. so every year 19 of those teams are disappointed with what happens. the sky is NOT falling. Sure, I am upset with losing to ku, but the program for the most part is headed in the right direction. Please, people, calling for Pinkel's head? get a life.

By afanger @ Monday, December 01, 2008 6:07 PM
tim,
i agree with whoever above said that you are using a little to much emotion by calling this year a GIANT dissapointment. the season is not even over!
if we beat OU, which i understand is highly unlikely, AND win whatever bowl game we get into, the year is a BETTER year than last year. why, because we would have BEAT OU! which we did not do last year. sure, we will have had one more loss than last year, but at least we will have had a huge win in a huge game.
i think mu is taking huge steps forward, but weaknesses with pinkel and the whole program were exposed this year. i hope pinkel is good enough to acknowledge those weaknesses and "shoot and fix" them.
i am in the minority and think that we will be good next year. i would wager that we win 9 games and go to a decent bowl.
people, you can't expect to win a national championship at the drop of a hat. it is going to take years to get there. i sure hope that pinkel is the guy to get us there. if our defense gets better and we develop some kind of clock eating offense in the next year or 2 i will start to believe pinkel really is the guy to get us to the next level.
