Last Call For Writers In The insideSTL.com Political Section...And A St. Louis Geopolitical Observation And Question
By Tim McKernan Thursday, September 25, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, I invited insideSTL.com readers to submit sample columns if they wanted to write for the new STL Politics section. Given the passion surrounding the upcoming election, I thought this septic tank of a site would delve into the political game by providing a forum for aspiring columnists...who know...going in...that there's no compensation for this fledgling section.

However, if you want your opinions read by a few thousand St. Louisans, this would be a good forum...because I'm not really big into censorship. If you don't believe me, see the following: Barlow, Maggie.

I want a liberal or two. I want a conservative or two. And, I'd really like to have and independent...someone who honestly doesn't know who they're going to vote for just yet. And, when I say independent, I don't mean "independent" in the way Jimmy "The Cat" Hayes throws it around.

So, if you're interested, fire off a sample column in the next 24 hours to me at tmckernan@insidestl.com.

Now...

...getting to my observation, and this is like the Cafferty Report on The Situation Room...except as opposed to an old, grumpy guy asking you a question, you have a 31 year-old grumpy guy asking you a question. And, I'm really looking forward to reading your answers (should you care to leave them below in the comments section).

Here's the deal:

I was driving to our accountant's office off of Gravois a couple of days ago. I got there by driving south on Sappington Road from our house in Kirkwood, which is off of Woodlawn.

I notice everyday when I'm driving to and from downtown that there are more and more signs in my Kirkwood neighborhood supporting Barack Obama. I would say for every McCain sign I see on my drive, I see 10 Obama signs.

However, when driving to my accountant's office on Gravois, I noticed that really once I crossed Watson Road, I didn't see one Obama sign, but I saw a number of McCain signs.

Here's my question: Why?

I probably live about 3 to 4 miles from Watson Road if I were to take Berry Road to Sappington...and yet there seems to be---at least with signage---a big difference between the two communities in regard to who they're supporting in the upcoming election.

I'm honestly fascinated by it.

My neighborhood is 90% (if not 100%) white. The neighborhoods on the south side of Watson Road are also white.

I would guess my neighborhood is middle to upper middle class. I would guess the neighborhoods on the south side of Watson Raod are middle to upper middle class.

My neighborhood is made up of mainly Catholics or Protestants. I would guess the neighborhoods on the south side of Watson Road are made up of mainly Catholics or Protestants.

In other words, the seemingly obvious factors that divide voting habits in 2008 aren't...at least on the surface...present.

So, honestly, why do you think a large part of Kirkwood is full of Obama signs, and then just a couple miles to the south, the area is full of McCain signs.

I discussed this with my wife last night and some of the people here at the office today, and I'm really looking forward to hearing the theories of the insideSTL.com readers.

Leave your comments below...or feel free to email me at tmckernan@insidestl.com. And, once again, if you want to write for the new insideSTL.com Politics section, email me a sample column.

Because dumb, low-information-voting hoosiers refuse to vote for Muslim terrorist communists.

Educated people who can think for themselves vote Obama.

The Republican "base" is the proles. Simple as that. Republicans have won the propaganda war.

By GRUMPY BILL @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 4:05 PM
The answer is:
Because a lot of us haven't made up our minds. So if someone on your block puts up a sign then the others who think like that person put theirs up too.
I am 62, white, Christian
and still haven't made up my mind.
It a great election and both men are worth voting for.
McCain, who is about my age, was hated by the Republicans until they figgured out that he was the only one of them with a chance of winning.
Obama who is a breath of fresh air and attitude in this terribly politically stinky time.
The VP's don't count.

By koll27 @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 4:13 PM
If you are 62, then McCain is not "about your age" He is approaching death. As for the question that was posed, I think you'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure the voting habits of a sample of the same types of people. A lot of it is peer pressure, in my opinion. If a neighbor whose opinion you trust has a sign in their yard, you might be more apt to put that candidate's sign in your yard.

By Dr. Bunsen Honeydew @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 4:20 PM
Campaign workers in a neighborhood with lots of friends will give away free signs to them.

By Gussie @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 4:39 PM
Who are your accountants?

By papster @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:10 PM
for the same reason that the City always votes for a democrat, because people are sheep and tend to follow the sheep that makes the most noise, in this case Kirkwood follows the obama sheep and Crestwood follows the McCain sheep

By mbutch65 @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:16 PM
I'm only speculating... but aren't there more blacks living in the Kirkwood area and more "redneck" mentality living south of Watson road. My daughter used to live in south county, and these people had the Washington County mentality.

By TC @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:24 PM
Space Mountain, show yourself. Interesting that you call McCain voters, hoosier, ill-informed, and uneducated. Especially, Since 100% of the people in this country that are lazy, unemployed, living on welfare, can barely read, and soak the government dry ALL vote democrat.

Barack Obama is the most left-wing, most radical, socialist candidate in the history of the US. Think Obama... think Chavez. Think Castro... think Karl Marx. That's who this guy has fashioned himsefl after.

Look up Saul Alinsky, and how Obama basically used his bible on "Community Organizing" to get into politics.

Look at a dude named Bill Ayers... an admitted terrorist, who murdered innocent Americans... and the fuck, Obama, jump-started his political career in that guy's living room. He accepted donations from Ayers. he chaired the Woods Foundation that Bill Ayers started, and they both attended chair meetings together.

Obama's mom is self-described Marxist, Atheist. His two dads, were both muslims... one an extreme radical. he choses to surround himself, with the most hate-filled, racist, radicals this country has ever seen... and you fucking idiots just choose to ignore it.

McCain is no angel. He's hated by conservatives, b/c he's a two-faced, liar, who will do anything or sign any bill if it makes him look good to the press.

But Obama, and his associations with radical extremists will come to light in October. We're already seeing articles in the WSJ, and some of the Mainstream Media is finally covering it.

There is NO DOUBT about his association with terrorist Bill Ayers. Even George Stephanapolous and Hillary dinged him on it in the democratic debates this past Primary. it appears as though Obama did everything BUT fuck Bill Ayers.

This isn't a vote FOR McCain... it's a vote against a radical, left-wing, socialist.

By Bryan @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:31 PM
TC & Space Mountain should apply for the "independent" columnist.

By Big 8 John @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:39 PM
Tim:

It's very simple. People who live in Kirkwood/ Webster see themselves as the liberal enlightened. That 's why many of them overpay to live in large but weathered houses. Since these are racially "mixed" neighborhoods the residents see themselves as culturally diverse although every effort is taken to segregate - see Meacham Park. Those are the Obama supporters in your new hood.

By TC @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:47 PM
ha... nice. I'm definitely not an independent.

And I don't think that an independent truly exists. Everyone has a bias. Leaning right or left is as much a part of one's genetic makeup as the color of their hair.

Those who are independent, are completely clueless and ignorant of any political history/current affairs. Anyone, who actually pays attention to the political game, has an opinion... and it ISN'T down the middle. Those who claim to be down the middle, are the most chicken shit, b/c it's the easy way out.

Think about what a Milquetoast, linguine-spined, submissive one must be to be too scared to admit and fight for their own principles.

I think Liberals are the destruction of the US and the Constitution... but I respect those who say,"hey, I'm a liberal, I'm proud and i fight for what I believe"

People who claim to be down the middle, are assuaging their own guilt for being naive, or their own guilt for thinking in one particularly unpopular way.

By Bryan @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:54 PM
TC - yeah I realize you're not an independent. Do you follow your party blindly? One could counter-argue that the weak(or blind) one is the one who will place their vote regardless of the candidate(s) qualifications, only b/c of party affiliation. Whereas someone who considers themself independent may want to weight the specific issues important to him, then vote accordingly.

By Harvey @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 5:59 PM
Let one of your "Cougars Next Door" write the Republican forum and a "Girl Next Door" write the Democrat forum. As for the independant, any of them that fail to spell e-l-e-c-t-i-o-n correctly should be given this forum.

By TC @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 6:47 PM
Bryan - good question. Very good question in fact. (BTW - I knew you didn't think I was independent... I hope you didn't take it that way... i thought it was a good sarcastic comment you made)

I will vote conservative on almost all issues... but not blindly. I really do pride myself on following the history of the US, and the current political climate.

Certainly, one can side with issues that conflict with a straight party-line ticket. I'm conservative on almost all issues, but I'm not religous at all... I don't vote with evanelicals... I could care less about gay marriage... I'm against abortion, but I may someday be in a situation that calls for it, and who knows how I'd feel at that time. But despite the fact that I don't vote blindly, I am still a conservative valued American.

I claim that noone is independent, 'cause I'v NEVER met an independent that follows politics closely, and still gets torn b/w the issues. Everyone I've met who claims independent political values, turns out to be completely uneducated on the issues... and is scared to admit they just don't pay close enough attention.

Hell, maybe I live in a box, and I'm sheltered from the rest of mainstream America... but I've lived in 4 different cities, and have never met a "true" independent.

By reilley65 @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 7:35 PM
LET'S NOT FORGET WHO'S GOING TO BE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY IF MCCAIN'S TICKER EXPLODES!!! CAN YOU ACTUALLY PICTURE HER IN THE WHITE HOUSE? SHE HAS TO UNZIP HER HUSBANDS PANTS JUST TO COUNT TO 21...DO WE REALLY WANT FOUR MORE YEARS OF THIS ADMINISTRATION? GASOLINE PRICES HAVE TRIPLED SINCE THIS BAFOON HAS BEEN IN OFFICE... GO OBAMA!! TIME FOR A CHANGE.

By cardsbadabing @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 7:36 PM
TC, great commentary, I agree w/ you whole heartedly. I'm not particulary religious, could care less about gay marriage, am pro-life but don't believe someone should be told what to do or not do in that situation (I think it's the mother and father's choice even though I don't personally believe in it) and can go on and on. However, I think you hit it on the head. I also feel that the D's keep clinging to the abortion issue because they think McCain/Palin will overturn Roe v Wade if given a chance to elect a Supreme Court justice. What the jacklasses don't realize that EVEN if that happened (which it won't) then it would go back to the individual states to decide.

A couple other points the D's keep making-

"McCain has Big Oil Lobbyists on his ticket" What isn't being told is that Obama has the ex-leaders of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae on his ticket, yet the D's are all up in arms over the bailout crisis...

Border Patrol and Illegal Immigrants- do the D's not realize that over 40% of prison inmates in the US are illegal aliens? How much is that costing the tax payers?!? Have a green card, great, come here to work. No green card, stay home.

Speaking of taxes, D's always claim to be for the middle class. History has shown, time and time again, that Democratic Presidents raise taxes to everyone, especially the middle and upper class. Seems to me that the lazy people who sit on their asses and collect unemployment when they could find jobs (maybe the ones all the illegal immigrants are dying to have by jumping over the fence to cross the border... hmmm... that's a whole other conversation). Now I realize many people w/o jobs are not lazy but for crying out loud people this country was founded on having nothing, pulling yourself up from your bootstraps, working hard to earn a living and living the American dream. Ever hear of the Boston Tea Party? We were being taxed out the ass by the British! I also realize there are many people who need government help, healthcare, etc but why should people who work the hardest pay for (the most part, this is a partial, not blanket statement) pay for people who have their hands out??? Raising taxes cripples both small and big business, which eliminates both blue and white collar jobs and prevents new jobs (as well as jobs that were already lost) from happening.

Just my two cents. Poliltics involves mud slinging, there's no doubt. If you're a diehard Democrat, great. Bring the facts and show how it will work, not pie in the sky idealism. I'm no George W. fan but he was handed a mess after Clinton dwindled the military to gain a budget surplus. The economy was already going in the tank before W took office, and when 9/11 happend, NO PRESIDENT, Dem or Repub, could have been put in worse situation.

All I ask, regardless of your party affilitation, is do your homework. One last thing- if McCain is so unqualified then how can we vote for a presidential candidate who has spent less than a year in a major politcal office?

OK, enough ranting, I'm done...

TC, thanks for making my own point for me.

Tim, here's an interesting article referencing scientific, psychological studies on why people vote Republican or Democrat.

It's funny to me how people think that communism is a terrorist idea. It's an economic philosophy. It's actually not a bad iidea but it can't really work well because people are too greedy and undo the foundations of it.

By TC @ Friday, September 26, 2008 9:59 AM
You can tell by his call name that Space Mountain doesn't live in reality.

Liberalism is a mental disorder... one of arrested development, where the individual refuses to accept responsibility in adulthood.

Why shouldn't I get more money handed to me? The government should feed us, clothe us, shelter us, and provide healthcare... doesn't matter who has to pay the bill, as long as it's not me.

I'm poor because of imperialist capitalsim, not because I refuse to work hard, or invent, or invest.

If I forclose on my house, it's capitalism's fault, not myself for borrowing money that I can never pay back.

If my girlfriend gets pregnant at a young age irresponsibly, it is not my job to provide for my family or be a dad, there should be government programs that act as the father.

It's America's fault that the planet changed 1/10 of a degree in the last century. It's America's fault that people hate us. It's America's fault that the penguins are dying. It's America's fault for everything bad in the world.

Do as I say, but not as I do.

We'll tax people to pay for Social Security, and let the government piss away the money on social programs... and when we come to collect and the money is gone, well shit... we'll just tax 'em again.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=56494

THE REASON SOCIALISM, COMMUNISM doesn't work... is because it has been PROVEN to fail... OVER AND OVER AND OVER throughout the history of mankind.

The US has proven that free markets, innovation, incentive is the best way to build a rich, free and healthy society.

Unfortuantely, the democrats want to take every aspect of our living and control ownership. They want all the mortgage busines, they want all the healthcare, they want all the education, they want all the banks, they want to reulate car manufacturing, they want to control oil, they want to control farming and agriculture... The funny thing is... The government has NEVER run a succussful, money-making program.

By Space Mountain @ Friday, September 26, 2008 10:35 AM
Yeah we don't need government for anything.

Except for a few 700 BILLION DOLLARS here and there when the mythical "free market" fails.

LOL.

Socailism for the rich, capitalism for everyone else. I see how it works.

By TC @ Friday, September 26, 2008 11:22 AM
I knew some dumb ass would write something completely stupid and wrong again.

We're in this mess because your favorite democrats like Bill Clinton, Mario Cuomo, Janet Reno, Jaime Gorelick, and other dems required a quantum leap in the number of affordable, low-to-moderate-income loans that the two mortgage banks --known collectively as Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSE's) -- would have to buy. Cuomo himself dramatically hiked GSE mandates to buy mortgages in undeserved neighborhoods and for people with 'very-low-income.'

Cuomo contended that Fannie and Freddie weren't granting mortgages to minorities and low=income individuals at the same rate as the private market.

So, here we have democrats FORCING private loan/mortgage companies to foot the bill and pick up loans for people who likely have no chance of repaying them.

And as for the oversight needed to make sure that board memebers and ceo's weren't cooking the books and taking on loans that would never be paid, Bush proposed legislative oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac... But the bill didn't become law, for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it on a party-line vote in the committee, signaling that this would be a partisan issue. They argued that Republicans were trying to keep low-income people from having houses, which is absurd... they were just trying to protect those who would have to pay the bill when this socialist-forced mortgage crisis failed.

Republicans couldn't even get the Senate to vote on the matter.

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E06E3D6123BF932A2575AC0A9659C8B63&sec=&spon=&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

We now know that many of the senators who protected Fannie and Freddie, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Christopher Dodd, have received mind-boggling levels of financial support from them over the years.

Thank You Democrats for fucking over John Q Taxpayer again.

This is a PRIME example of why government interference and socialist programs don't work. They forced the spread of wealth to be more fair, and in the end, we're all fucked for it.

Liberalism 101.

By Space Mountain @ Friday, September 26, 2008 12:45 PM
>>>I knew some dumb ass would write something completely stupid and wrong again<<<

Took the words right out of my mouth.

I would try expanding your sources beyond your little rightwing neocon blogosphere if you're interested at all in what's really going on.

By TC @ Friday, September 26, 2008 1:57 PM
Space Mountain is yet to add any significant insight to the argument.

Are you scared that you'll lose on ideas every time.

We're still waiting for you to explain how the crisis happened... or even just give a glimpse of how the world works.

You've done nothing but write short clips about how the right wing is a bunch of stupid Hoosiers and hayseeds.

Please be a man and expand on your thoughts... rather than just repeat the typical Keith Olbermann-Bill Maher chin-boogy.

By Imaspy @ Friday, September 26, 2008 3:05 PM
Can't anyone answer a question w/o having their agenda come all over my face?

Tim - I think neighborhood demographics can really be curious. In the case of Kirkwood it's pretty easy. Kirkwood is a very old community with a tradition of tolerance for diversity. That being said, it was Kirkwood that drove Cookie to shoot up City Hall. But overall I think the Kirkwood community likes to think of itself as progressive at least by STL standards. You go south of Watson and you are in solid "white and right" territory. People are much less ambitious to be progressive in their thinking and hold on to church and their perceived moral superiority. Most of them wouldn't admit it but there are strong racial overtones in South County. Kirkwood residents are much more likely to offended by the "N" word where in South County after about 4 beers at the bar people will start calling Stephen Jackson a N for saying this or that. No way are those people going to accept a black President, no matter how pro-union or pro-middle class he is.

By TC @ Friday, September 26, 2008 3:41 PM
Sorry Imaspy... you can't say something as stupid as you did, and expect not for it to get pointed out.

"That being said, it was Kirkwood that drove Cookie to shoot up City Hall"

You should be ashamed of yourself... blaming Kirkwood for Cookie Thornton being a murderer thug... Why don't you say that to the faces of the Svoboda's... or Rick Hummel's ex-wife's family. They're all morning the loss of loved ones who will never again be on this earth.

Oh... but I forgot... it was The City of Kirkwood's fault. Nevermind, I guess they deserved to be struck down in the most violent possible fashion.

I'm willing to accept that you are just a terrible communicator... and didn't realize how amazingly stupid, insensitive and asinine you sounded by saying, "That being said, it was Kirkwood that drove Cookie to shoot up City Hall"
