We're all for celebrating the absurdity and stupidity of sports, be it professional, amateur, recreational or otherwise. It's the bedrock of our content. What we're not all for is Extreme Softball Guy (pictured), as in, the guy who fatally punched an opponent two weeks ago.
Sean Sanders, 27, ran off the field after punching Daniel Andrews, 37, in the head at the end of the game Sunday afternoon in Parma, a Rochester suburb, and was captured a mile away some six hours later, authorities said. Andrews was taken unconscious to a hospital and placed on life support. He died Monday evening.
Aside from the utter ridiculousness of a man killing another man over a rec softball game, Sanders was charged with second degree assault. Sure, it wasn't premeditated, didn't take careful planning and was the result of a meathead gone over the edge in the "heat of the moment", but second degree assault?
Seems a little weak, especially when you consider that Sanders was imprisoned in 2003 for beating a man with a golf club while he was intoxicated. As of right now, the prosecutors are letting a grand jury decide whether they should upgrade the charges. Um, that's probably a wise idea, guys.
Sanders spent four years in prison for the golf club incident, and prior to that, spent eight months incarcerated thanks to some burglary charges. A TV station
in New York reported that the victim, Daniel Andrews, was involved in some fighting of his own as both teams sparred throughout the game - which could keep a lesser charge for Sanders. But given his track record, 1st or 2nd degree manslaughter sounds more than appropriate.
Since our legal system loves to turn criminals into victims, I'm sure Sanders' penalty won't be too harsh. Sure he attacked his victim in the back of the head while the teams were lined up to shake hands, but that's nowhere near the level of a 1st Degree assault, or dare I say it, manslaughter. Right?
For the record, Andrews is married and has three children.
On a completely different note, but one that
is equally disturbing, a murder of a Nebraska-Omaha student in January was egged on by an enraged football fan still pissed about what he perceived as crappy officiating during the NFL Conference Championship weekends.
These people need to be shipped out to a deserted island and left for dead. Maybe Sanders and the enraged football fan, Kyle Bormann, could settle somewhere in the Pacific with nothing but a golf club and a football. I'm sure they could find use for it.
