Recently, I recently took a trip. While at the airport, I noticed that the attention of a majority of the soon-to-be passengers, including the kids, was focused on the television. I travel quite a bit and this phenomenon was a first.
Of course, the topic on every television was the election.
I know, I know, Tim did not hire me to write about politics. Stick to the kid and the Prada, Valerie.
Well, I will get into that. I just wanted to preface with how consuming this election has been.
So consuming, that after a brief statement about the temperature of his Spaghettios, Aiden blurted out, “I am Barack Obama and I approve this message.” Yeah, it is affecting everyone, even the pre-Ks.
I want to clarify that this is by no means a ploy to sway your vote for tomorrow. If you have not cemented your vote by now, there is not much I can or want to do for you. This is purely for your entertainment and to show how our 4 year-old would be voting if the polling booths were 3 foot shorter.
I was raised a Republican. My father was a farmer and an NRA member, and our second home was a small German church. My husband’s career should put him in the same boat, but he is more of a liberal. Our son is 100%, without a doubt, a Democrat… and he loves Barack Obama.
This is when I knew Aiden was serious…
A few weeks ago, Aiden was playing with a neighborhood friend. Before an epic Wii battle took place, Aiden paused to ask if his buddy liked Obama or McCain. Relief was the only emotion expressed when Obama’s name rolled off little Johnny’s tongue. I realized that he was now picking his friends by political standing. Fabulous.
When we heard that Obama would be speaking only minutes from our house, we knew that this would be a once in a lifetime experience for us all and we could not miss it. I, however, had a prior obligation and could not attend. The boys proceeded to go without me.
Shortly after the rally, I met them for lunch. Both of them reeked of political excitement. Aiden told me what Barack Obama was wearing , and then went right in to a story regarding pie. I am sure it had meaning.
In the middle of the restaurant, Aiden replayed the moment when he began chanting while Obama took the stage… “Yes We Can, Yes We Can!”
These forty-two inches of little man was shaking his fist in the air, and had more conviction than I have ever seen from anyone. As he continued to relate his experiences from his first political rally, he got excited and yelled, “Ooo-Baaa-Maaa!” at different intervals.
Then he said,
“Mommy, I got to see Obama, but I didn’t get to hug him.”
I asked if he would hug McCain. He replied, “Neh, he is old, but I would hug Sarah Palin, she’s a hot mama.”
So, this year, I will be leaning Democratic. I will be voting for Barack Obama for two reasons. One, because my son wants to hug him, and two, because I can’t have my number one regarding the vice-president as a hot mama.
I am pretty sure I am safe with Joe Biden.
Now, get out there and vote people… Aiden said you should.
