The Forgotten Demographic
By Maggie Barlow Wednesday, September 10, 2008

As we approach Election Day in November, we all have decisions to make.

The choices being what they are leave us with decisions regarding race, age, and gender, in addition to political agenda. But in reality, it goes deeper than that...a lot deeper.

I consider myself a spiritual person. I believe in God, I go to church on a semi-regular basis, and I pray each night. I am prolly not a very good Catholic, even if the Bell Curve is adjusted for today's morals and standards...unless you throw in enough priests to skew the pedophile numbers. I drink too much, I swear too much, I engage in deviant sex, I say hurtful things to others, and oh, yeah...I write this column.

And, Maggie On Top is kinda where I am going with my angle this week. I get a lot of heat for writing the stuff I write each week. Similarly, I am sure Tim McKernan fights a battle, both real and hypothetical as regards this column, and other content on this site. The moral majority got our last President elected, and I am curious how the current candidates will spin their stances and intentions regarding the typical lightning rod issues, which motivate these moralists off their pews and into the voting booth. I would love to see both candidates thumb their noses at this group, but that is not realistic.

No, it is not realistic, it is not likely, and it is not practical.

am paid to write about sex…paid. It is my job, and if I tried to slide a column by Tim about gardening or designer purses, he would throw it back at me like a Red Lobster gift certificate. Yet, every week I get railed on by people who chastise me for being as sexually open as I am. These people strongly disagree with what I write, my morals, my sexual preference, and my use of the non-word “prolly”. My column is promoted as sexually oriented material, and I am fairly consistent with my content.

Why then, are these moralists even clicking on Maggie On Top?

Would that not make them hypocrites?

My point is…if the Bible thumpers who manage to find this snuff film of a journalistic effort I write every week take the time to crucify me for doing my job exactly as I am expected…what would they do to a Presidential candidate who failed to at least pretend to cater to their Puritan propaganda and Christian concerns?

Scary, huh?

And we wonder why candidates make campaign promises they do not keep.

Try telling a Baptist that you are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, and see what the message is from the pulpit next Sunday morning.

Try telling a Catholic that you are in favor of condom distribution in schools, and imagine what the talk around the bingo table would be like.

Anyway, I am interested to see which way the Jerry Falwell minions fall in this election.

On one hand, you have a dynamic young Senator from a “fly over” state. He represents hope, and promises change. The problem for many voters is he is black and of questionable descent and religious belief. Ironically, he is driving the bus which typically appeals to the Bible Belt.

On the other hand, you have an aging war veteran (most likely with one of those handicap thingies hanging from his rear-view mirror) attempting to coax voters onto the same bus which has taken us to $4 a gallon gas and a mortgage crisis. His already obstacle-laden road is now compounded by the presence of a female co-pilot with a knocked-up and unwed teenage daughter.

For the moral majority, this is a conundrum akin to that which a Presbyterian must face on Super Bowl Sunday.

Yeah, this election is gonna be a good one, and the players are exactly what we need right now. Both candidates have hot wives. The Republican Vice-Presidential candidate is an attractive and intelligent woman, who was not afraid to jump into the public eye, knowing full well the moralistic press was gonna question her integrity via her daughter.

Personally, I applaud her for this. However, that situation is gonna hurt her team as they seek the support of the conservative demographic.

Demographics…political campaigning is all about the demographics. Both Presidential candidates have aligned themselves with a running mate to attract a particular demographic to which they might otherwise not have had sufficient appeal.

As I said earlier, I would love to see a candidate eschew the vote and support of the moral majority in this country. Instead of pandering for the vote of hypocritical moralists and convenient Christians, I would like to see a candidate align himself (or herself) with the values of my demographic…and with the demographic that I have hammered out here with Maggie On Top.

Yeah, give me a President who enjoys a fine cigar after a long day of governing. Give me a President who welcomes the oral input of interns. Give me a President who smells what all of Washington is cooking, but doesn’t necessarily inhale. Give me a President who is sensitive enough to relieve his wife of the burdensome task of satisfying him sexually, when her Senatorial schedule conflicts with his orgasmic needs.

And give me a President who can charm the dumb off a blonde.

If he manages to maintain a stable economy, operate the government at a fiscal surplus, keep our troops out of countries where camels outnumber Starbucks,  refrain from altering historical documents, upon which the very foundation of this country is based, and trampling on the civil liberties of the citizens…then that is a bonus.

But, I guess that ship has already sailed…

Clearly, my demographic is a forgotten one, or minimally, one which is merely taken for granted. I am not sure if that is because my priorities are not important to the candidates, or if it is just too polarizing for them to campaign on such things.

Regardless, whomever wins this election, I am pretty sure my column is not gonna be getting any unique hits from the Oval Office.

Wow I really don't think you should be able to talk about politics. Your talks on se are only slightly decent but anything out side of your "comfort zone" is just aweful. And I really doubt a lot of bible bangers are reading this and getting annoyed at you. Seems to me you just get crap from people that think your stories are a joke and slightly trashy. But that’s just my thoughts.

Hey Sarah Jessica Parker wannabe..

First off, you ARE an incredibly gifted writer...about sex. I will give that to you hands down. I understand why Tim pays you, you are clearly an asset to insidestl.com...to right about sex.

However, I get sick and fucking tired of shallow-minded "progressives" like yourself playing the race card. Besides Barack Obama (who is an incredibly gifted teleprompter reader), you are the only folks playing the race card.

The fact that NObama is unfit to be commander-in-chief is why americans will NOT for him...and the fact that he is a pussy.

By @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:05 AM
Please someone name one of those asshats that don't use a teleprompter. The fact is that they all use them yet some people we won't mention (rhymes with Mush and McPain) STILL can't get it right and sound even close to intelligent. Just an observation though.

The article this week may not have been about Maggie getting fucked but it sure touched on our entire nation getting a rough piece of ass.

By NObama 08 @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:16 AM
Sure..every asshat uses a teleprompter, and Obama is definately the teleprompter master asshat. The point is when he doesn't use a teleprompter and turns on his "how can I not take a stance on this question AND avoid flat out lying filter"....then, my friend, he stutters like Sean Hannity. " DD Ddid DDiid LOokk..aggain..."

It was hilarious watching him finally face some really tough question from O'Reilly the last few nights. I would have thought O'Reilly's feet were doing the questioning, or that perhaps there was a teleprompter on the floor. And I also noticed that he was in love with O'Reilly's left knee. I was waiting for O'Reilly to yell at him to stop touching him. I'm sure you didn't watch it though..

I like that word now..asshat

By @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:28 AM
I all up in CNN's buniness, not Fox's. So if that is what you meant by me not watching it then I concur. If it was assuming anything but that then you would be making false assumptions my friend.

By mvh @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:28 AM
My wife and I look forward to your column every week and it gives us a subject of conversation that we wouldn't have from our day to day lives. Unfortunately, not this week.
In truth, the candidates look to the polls of certain demographics to determine a strategy to get elected and that is where they will focus their time and money. This means appealing to their base whether it includes the right to lifers or the radical environmentalists. Almost certainly, this will result in hypocrisy. Each of us has to prioritize what issues are most important to us individually and vote for the candidate that will help the most.
I felt like this was a political opinion piece. I take advice from experts in a particular field, whether their knowledge is based upon experience or education. I never took political advice from rock stars and I am not taking it from a sex columnist, although a very good one.

By @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:30 AM

Oh oh look at the grammer bashers are out early today. Noboma you should watch yourself here. This group of failure gets pissy if you insult the queen trash pile here and her "writing" skills. Now this group talking about politics is rich, I doubt any of them can explain an issue and why it matters to people. Most liley they are just on the Obama bandwagon because he is coll hip and black rather then actually learning about policies or anything important. This is going to be great hearing the political views here.

By Mac @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:46 AM
I'm not a democrat. I'm not a republican. I'm an Independent. Quite frankly, anyone who thinks either of the candidates is a great fit, is an idiot. Like most of the free thinking people, I will be voting for the least of the two evils, "options."

You people that come on here and immediately start to attack people and thier precieved opinions are classic. You obviuosly are high class and awful important to this world having the time to bash the hell out of people. (this does include the awesome poster who takes the time to draw a graphic in his comment section....awesome.

On a side note, just to play devils advocate....and again, i'm not voting for Obama, and I don't think he is on the same level, but regardless.....

"Most liley they are just on the Obama bandwagon because he is coll hip and black rather then actually learning about policies or anything important."

You say there is a huge following of a YOUNG candidate with NO experience and who just talks a good game...

.... that sounds exactly like JFK....doesn't it?

By mvh @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:57 AM
"you saw 'advice' somewhere in this column?"
I read a column that complained of hypocrisy by the moral majority, which in fairness are the readers who complain to you about your column, so they are more relevant. My point was that hypocritical groups exist in both parties.
Your column complained of one group and discussed what you were looking for in a presidential candidate. Felt like advice.

By @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:04 AM
I don't think either candidate has what Maggie is looking for so no advice was could have been given.

I say we all vote for Roland.

By mbarlow @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:05 AM
or maybe an opinion? The problem with the moral majority usually is that opinions which differ from their own are often deemed inappropriate or incorrect.

This article is an opinion (mine?), intended to produce an exchange of ideas.

This will be the most "hit" column I have ever writen.

It is amusing to me that people who are unable to spell on a third-grade level feel qualified to critique the writing of anyone.

By NObama 08 @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:14 AM
maggie- you have better control of the English language than me, no question.

In my hastiness to respond to your diatribe I am guility of using 'right' vs 'write' as astutely noticed by Mac. I am also guilty of misspelling Obama on purpose and misspelling multiple words delibrately to be a smart asshat to Mac.

By mvh @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:29 AM
I had a macro economics professor walk into the first day of class and say "I have my bullshit and you have your bullshit. You won't be graded upon whether your bullshit is different than mine" The most open minded educator I ever had and I have tried to apply that to life.
I hope you don't think that because I considered your column "advice" that you believe it is because I am part of the moral majority. I mostly felt disappointed my wife and I don't have a sex column to discuss tonight.

By mbarlow @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:35 AM
I understand totally.

I know this is different for me, and I understand the opposition. I have been told that I am free to write about anything I want. We will see how that plays for future columns.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for commenting.

By ? @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:42 AM
Actually Mac JFK actually explained what he was running about and while there was No MTV back then I really do not think that thre would be that much bandwagoning.

Also JFK did this neat thing called being in the House of Reps for 6 year and in the Senate for 7 years. Actually knowing about politics is a help I think.

And Mags I enjoy that you point out spelling mistakes being on the level of a third grader. Now do you actually know what words thrid graders are supposed to know how to spell or just a poorly written insult. I find it amusing that you think you are a better writer with your plotless poorly constucted stories, that are only made readable by an editor and hours staring at spell checkers.

And finally other things that amuse Maggy

By Imaspy @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:51 AM
It's amazing to me that not one person has brought up a policy issue. Americans are so fucking stupid about politics. Everyone wants this to be an US weekly debate. Has anyone on this board even read a policy breakdown for these candidates? No, of course not. Americans are less likely to read actual policy than they are to read the ingredients of whatever nasty shit they are eating and making themselves fat with this week while sitting on the couch and yelling at shit on TV they can't do anything about like sports or Paris Hilton. Why don't some of you fuck sticks talk about the energy policy of the candidates? Obama wants to put $150 billion in investment into wind, solar, geothermal and other non-polluting sources that would be almost 100% within the US economy. (Some of the wind production technology would come from Europe surely thus the use of "almost".) McCain wants to rely heavily on nuclear production of electricity. Those spent rods from the reactors would have to travel via rail through St. Louis from the East Coast on their way to Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Doesn't sound too attractive to me and I'm not to fond of my great, great, great, great grandchildren wondering why the fuck my generation left highly dangerous nuclear material for them to manage. For anyone who thinks offshore drilling is even an issue, your too fucking igonorant to talk to. Do homework on US use of oil and the potential from offshort sights and then we can talk. On the economy, I don't make $250,000 a year so my taxes will go down under the Obama plan. Fortune magazine lined up the plans and showed where even those making $250K - $600K will pay an average of $12 more per year in taxes under the Obama plan! Those making over $600K per year will pay A LOT more though ($150K+). Whichever one of you dipshits wants to claim that kind of dough is just a fucking liar. I'm glad to see all of these asshole athletes get it in the ass on taxes after thanking Jesus for allowing them to hit a fucking homerun. Jesus said to give up a good portion of your wealth to the poor fuckstick so don't tell me you have a "foundation" that directs 1/2 of 1% of your net worth to the poor and tell me Jesus helped you hit a homerun. Time to pay up! Last but not least, if McCain wins, abortion will be ILLEGAL in this country in about 10 years. That's right folks, if you get rapped by a mugger or if your teenage daughter gets a mickey and ends up pregnant, no options there unless you want to ship her up to Canada. I know Catholic women who have had abortions as teenagers who are voting for McCain....amazing. I won't even go into healthcare, the environment (it aint just global warming...) or homosexual rights. You want issues? Then fucking talk about them instead of saying how stupid everyone else is!

By Imaspy @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:57 AM
By the way Maggie, I liked the article. No, it was not informative for me as a political junkie, but it was an alternate take from someone who isn't too obsessed with politics and I undestood and respected it. I would love to see you and anyone else interested in politics do a little homework on the policy side and make a decision based on that rather than infidelity or haircuts.

Imaspy -

Boy it would just be horrific for you not to have the option of getting dressed up all cute, heading out for some cocktails, getting your picture taken for the website, meeting some guy with a horsecock who you have unprotected sex with...and then not be able to get an abortion.

After all, YOU have big things planned for your life.

You folks who battle for abortion rights (don't call yourself pro-choice and I won't call myself pro-life, because 99% of Americans are pro-choice and pro-life) always hide behind the rape or incest scenario when the overwhelming majority of abortions are the result of irresponsible male and female. Gimme a break, most abortions are a SELFISH act.

By Chief58 @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 12:25 PM
Maggie:

I can't help you out on what Jerry Falwell would say about Palin, but on the specific issue of her daughter's pregnancy evangelicals have and will embrace her. An evangelical recognizes every human as a sinner and abhors the sin, but loves the human. An evangelical will publicly support moral standards of living ones life and support a cultural that values those morals, but will not condemn those folks that sin ... but condemn the sin itself.

It is not hypocritical, in their view, nor does it seem hypocritical to me. It does take a sound religious foundation, however to put 'hate the sin but loive the sinner' into practice. Condemnation of fellow brothers and sisters is, in fact, a sin itself ... "love thy brother as you do me, etc.".

Those that are offended by evangelicals would prefer that there are zero moral standards in society, thus you can't sin. To christians attempting to lead their life according to their religion it doesn't quite work that way. But first and foremost a sinner must be loved as a person, cared for and nurtured. Jesus hung out w/ lepers and all sorts of cultural sinners of his day. He nurtured and counseled them. Evangelicals SHOULD strive to do the same, again, without condemnation of the person.

Timmy on his show, and now you, have issued a blanket condemnation of anyone that would bear the label 'religious right'. I would urge both of you and others of similar bent to notice the caring works of those folks in the community. Also, you might be surprised that those on the front lines of national natural disasters are in fact the same folks that you condemn politically. Maybe there needs to be some open-minded though from your side since blanket rebukes do lead to prejudices.

In short a proper evangelical will hate the sin you commit, but love you as a person.

Thanks for the opportunity to respond.

better to abort a baby than have a human that will grow up to be a burden on everyone else.

By Chud @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 12:30 PM
Holy fuck, Imaspy, you people with the "ABORTION WILL BE ILLEGAL" argument are so mother fucking wrong. Don't you realize that even if Roe v. Wade were overturned, that the laws on abortion would simply go back to the states to decide? If a state wanted to make it illegal, they could, BY A VOTE!!! No one man, not even "Bush's twin, McCain," which is the dumbest fucking mantra you libs have adopted, (who actually has a stance on issues, and doesn't change his stance constantly, and actually is able to answer a point blank question without stammering and dodging the questions), could "make abortion illegal." Fucking moron!!!!!

And the whole thing about "rich people should pay more taxes" is INSANE!! The rich people should give money to poor people? This isn't fucking Robin Hood, you liberal fuckwads!!! Why should someone who works hard to achieve "richness," or even some lucky asshole who inherits millions, have to give MORE of their money to these pathetic no-goods who don't get off their fucking asses and do something for themselves??? Far too many people sit with their fucking hands held out, expecting the government and "rich people" to do everything for them. THEN, when they do get welfare, medicaid, food stamps, and free housing, THEY STILL COMPLAIN THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO MORE FOR THEM!!!!!

My God, rich people should give more money to the poor?? Don't you realize that thoughts like that are COMMUNISTIC and flat out fucking crazy?? You're right, even if my taxes went up, it wouldn't be much, hell, they may go down, but NOBODY should be expected to fund all of these no-good, welfare people and illegal aliens, simply because "they can afford it since they are rich." Stupid, fucking stupid and wrong. You liberals are so unbelieveable. You know, you should invent a time machine so you could enjoy the glory days of the Soviet Union - then you'll get to experience socialism at its greatest! Then, come back and tell us how wonderful it was living with that type of government. I'm sure you would then be able to convince us that Obama is the right choice. Jump off a cliff, please.

By NObama 08 @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 12:46 PM
"better to abort a baby than to have a human who is a burden to everyone else"?? Are you fucking serious or was that for shock value?

By Imaspy @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 1:02 PM
Ok folks, let's talk issues here, please. On abortion first. Yes, living in Missouri I know abortion will be illegal very quickly in my state so I used that as the example. Many states will enact this law but I was wrong to say that they would have to go to Canada. Many could go to neighboring states. Still, it would cause a great deal of strain on a person who may be underage to even drive a car. Yes, it is often due to "irresponsible" behavior. But often it is "mild rape" or a boyfriend/girlfriend who at the age of 14 or 15 are having sexual petting when the male can't stop and goes further than the girl wants to and she ends up pregnant. There are a whole spectrum of ways for women to get pregnant when they don't want to and it is their private right to decide how to deal with it. (I'm a male by the way.)

On taxes: I never said "tax the rich and give to the poor" as a policy. The core value of the Obama plan is getting people to work. Nobody likes a handout and nobody benefits from a handout. The Jesus example was to point out the blatant hypocricy of these people. In fact the Obama plan wants to tax the super rich to pay off the debt that Bush has created and to pay for plans that will make us energy independenat and give tax breaks to working class people. The healthcare plan will be pricey but ultimately a healthy country is good for the economy.

Love the chatter though. Please try to do some homework and be able to admit when you are wrong. It makes the whole thing so much more productive....

By BozzWorth @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 1:06 PM
Impasy...if you love SOCIALISM so much go live in europe, they love that shit over there with there apathetic lifestyles 'ho-hum' economies that are smaller than most states here. No room for that in America, we want to be at the top, not mulling around in the middle like europe...could go on for days but YOU are so IGNORANT that it wont matter..

By Chud @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 1:09 PM
Admit being wrong? Did you seriously just say that? Then you admit that you were wrong about abortion being illegal in 10 years. That is a flat-out stupid statement that is wrong. So, eat your own words, and admit you are wrong. Oh, and why should ANYONE, including the "super rich" pay for more, and more, and more, and more government programs? You liberals complain about how the government doesn't work, but what do you want to do? ADD MORE GOVERMENT AND MORE BUREAUCRACIES!!! You think that giving the government MORE money to play with will solve everything? You think letting the government control healthcare will solve everything? You think being more diplomatic with terrorists like whack-job Iran president (I'm not going to attempt to spell his name, for fear of having my response whittled down to me being a poor speller) will solve our problems with defense? Tell me how that makes sense? Can someone tell me how that makes sense? Lord, come on! Wake up!!!!!!

By NObama 08 @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 1:24 PM
Mild rape? That's a laughable term. Is that like mild pregnancy? Apparently the "14 and 15 year-olds" doing the "sexual petting" (a.k.a. "dry humping" or "my zipper is hurting my cock humping") was not mild, but heavy petting.

By @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 2:03 PM

By Imaspy @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 2:25 PM
Bozzworth: The US is falling behind in many of the educational standards from a global perspective. The growth of the Chinese economy drawfs our own and many other countries are quickly becoming more relevant than the US. Have you noticed where the US economy is right now? Do you know the value of the dollar currently? It is not long until your economy falters if you education system is falling lower and lower on the global scale. The Obama economy will get us off of foreign oil with American jobs being created. Clinton got people off of welfare and back to work and balanced the budget. Bush has enacted more entitlement programs than any president in history, has us in debt along with a mortgage crisis, falling dollar and rising prices everywhere. Did Bush give you a great economy?

Chud: The reason that abortion will more than likely be illegal is that McCain will appoint 2 Supreme Court justices who believe Roe v. Wade should be overturned. The two justices ready to retire have consistently voted to keep it as law. Thus the Supreme Court will be seated so that any "designer" suite could get the law overturned.

And no, big government is not the answer. Bush has created more entitlements and expanded government more than any president in history. A true Goldwater conservative should hate George Bush and McCain and in fact that is partially what Barr is running on. I can deal with a classic conservative who wants government out of their life. Lower taxes, stay out of foreign affairs that are none of our business (Iraq), don't legislate your religious views (abortion) and for that matter legalize drugs. That would be a true Goldwater conservative. You are just picking and choosing what you want me to do with my life. I don't want Iran to possess nuclear arms but shouldn't countries that are right next door to Iran be involved in the negotiations instead of the US playing global policeman? Use some logic man.

NoBama: Yah, I hated to use the term "mild rape". Rape is rape and any woman who says no should be respected. What is interesting is that now that DNA evidence is available and it is tougher and tougher to be a dead beat dad due to searches by social security numbers etc. to garner wages, when McCain does make abortion illegal there will perhaps be more men paying up for the kids. (And yes, that is how history will view it. McCain will be the president who made abortion illegal.)

By Imaspy @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 2:40 PM
Just a quick homework assignment to anyone not allergic to books. Read "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins and you will understand that Bush & Co. are not conservatives but rather "Corporatists" in that they represent large international firms and use their influence to aide these corporations. Haliburton is the classic example but in Confessions you will read about Dole in Central America during the 70's. This is what Bush did with deregulating the mortgage industry and getting us into the mortgage crisis. Very good for a few large corporations who we are not bailing out with billions in tax dollars. This is what turns you "conservatives" into such fools. You are not arguing for sound economic policy which helps the middle class (which you likely in) but you are arguing for huge corporations creating billionaires who buy football teams and then charge poor schmucks like you $2,000 for a PSL which is probably 2 weeks wages.

$2000 in two weeks? i wish i made that much. i'm so poor =[

By NObama 08 @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 3:10 PM
I am thinking the people making $2000 every 2 weeks shouldn't be buying a $2000 PSL. ??? Should these "bad" owners give seats away dipshit?

By Chud @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 3:24 PM
Imaspy, yes, you make some good points. Bush is absolutely not the perfect conservative. I would never argue that he was the best president we've ever had, nor would I argue that McCain is the best candidate the Republicans could put out there. However, I would argue that taxing "the rich" more than they already are, raising corporate taxes, and raising capital gains taxes will do nothing but hurt the economy even more. Also, the abortion argument you keep making that McCain and his appointed justices will make abortion illegal is incorrect. YOU read up on it, and see that overturning Roe v. Wade will simply put the abortion argument back to the states to decide. Sure, some states could ban it, but many others would not. If your 14-year-old niece who was dry-humping her boyfriend and magically became pregnant wanted to get an abortion, she could go somewhere else and murder her love baby. Don't worry, women will always have the option of committing infanticide! The good ol' USA would never be that cruel!

Mags,

Let me help you write your next column that combines sex and politics...go out and buy yourself a couple dildos, on one of them write McCain and the other write Obama. Whichever one gets you off quicker should be your vote for the next president. Then you can write all about it and get back to your sexual roots.

By jd @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 8:59 PM
I don't like how people try to make others feel like retards for not voting by the same standards they do. For instance, I can't in good conscience vote for a candidate who supports abortion. That is something that is important to me so that helps shape my vote. Someone else may vote based on a candidate who supports helping the environment, or who is in favor of national healthcare. I personally think those issues are silly, but to others they are not. Who am I to tell them which issue is most important?
I bring this up just because I often get labled as a "dumb member of the moral majority" because I vote on this issue. However I don't chastize someone who votes on another issue. People are never going to agree on what the most important issues are. But attacking an argument rather than a group who makes that argument, like Maggie did, would be a start.

By cardsbadabing @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:47 PM
First let me say that I'm a Republican, but it has nothing to do about abortion, religion, race, or gender. It's about the American dream of working hard and reaping the benefits of your hard work. Democrats claim to be for the middle class, yet they raise taxes EVERY time they're in office. It will cripple the economy even worse because guess who get's hit the most? Individually it's the middle class, who's already hurting. The majority is small businesses. They will get nailed with more taxes as a business and the business owners will have to bend over and grab their ankles. That means laying people off or cutting pay just to keep their businesses afloat. Big Business you ask? Same thing applies to them. Companies will lose profit and not be able to expand which means LOST JOBS. Do your math people. Oh, and by the way, I don't care who was in office when 9/11 happened- they would have inherited the worst mess any president could ever face. A Democrat would have had the same problems George W. faced (and I'm no Bush lover). The difference is we had multiple terrorist attacks during the Clinton administration but none since... to me, that's just as important as earning a living honestly w/out having your hands out.

By imafan @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:11 PM
Maggie - I get it. You, like most of us, have more going on in your life than sex. Yes this is a sex column, and we look forward to it every week, but you have the RIGHT to WRITE about any topic you choose as this is your column. I understand your point. You weren't trying to sway the views of your readers. Instead, you were making an observation, stating an opinion, hoping to spur conversation - all the things a good column is supposed to do.

I can relate to what you wrote. I too consider myself a religious person. I have a personal relationship with God, I attend worship services regularly and I volunteer a few times a month at church. I also have a beloved vibrating silver bullet, a dildo, a brand new Rabbit vibe (because I broke the old one during a particularly exciting session of pleasuring myself) and a strong desire for double penetration. My husband is a willing participant as long as none of our activities include another man. I like to watch and read porn and I am always in the mood...even in church. I curse like a sailor when I am not in the company of children, I talk badly about people and I lie. (I called in sick to work today and I am perfectly fine!) The bottom line for me is that I am human. And I'm doing the best I can. Same goes for you. This is your JOB and you do it well. You PROLLY won't win any Pulitzer prizes, but you are a very good read. Keep it up, Mags. And forget these fucktards who don't get it.

By Imaspy @ Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:54 PM
Taxes and abortion. Can't get any more fun than that! What if we really taxed abortion heavily?

Seriously, the difference between the people who want abortion legal and the people who want it illegal is that one group wants to tell the other group what to do. If you think abortion is wrong, don't have one. I happen to think it is murder based on logic and to a lesser extent religion but I don't want to legislate my belief system. (Take a pregnant person, do nothing what happens? Take a pregant person, take an action, ie abortion, what happens? By definition that is murder. You took an action to prevent a life.) Seperation of church and state is probably the most important principal that our country holds. It is what keep us from being just another rogue, crazy government that is inflicting it's own brand of morality upon it's citizens. Today it is christianity but what will it be tomorrow? There are people that believe the earth sits on the back of a turtle but I don't want to put people in jail who eat turtle soup.

As far as taxes, somebody has to pay for this mess. We are up to our ears in debt and are the only developed country in the world without universal healthcare. I know Michael Moore is a fucktard to most conservatives but at the same time many conservatives praised Sicko the movie because it was apolitical and focused on the issue of what a moral crime it is to profit off of sick people. Obama wants to implement a healthcare plan, yes. He also wants to CUT TAXES FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS. We have to balance the budget somehow and all Obama is saying is let the rich take the responsibility since they have had such a free ride for the last 8 years. Even Warren Buffet said recently that the rich get off way too easy in this country. Very few of you have his credentials as a rich person or a money manager. (On a side note, don't you think it is interesting that the "Hollywood elite" work so hard to get someone in office who is going to raise their taxes? How altruistic is that?)

Thanks for toning it down a bit folks. We can disagree and all learn something at the same time. I know these are emotional issues and I love to go on rants as well but when we start calling each other names it all just flies out the window, you know?

By mbarlow @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 12:11 AM

Religious people scare me!

Why is it, that otherwise seemingly intelligent people, believe in the talking snake theory??

I say more power to you and your faith, we just can't legislate our country based on your beliefs.

You don't believe in abortion?

Don't have one.

You don't believe in gay sex?

Don't have it.

You don't support gay marriage?

Don't have allow it in your church.

You have no right to make me live your life like you CHOOSE to live yours. I think yours' sucks. You think mine sucks. Fine. Life in America should be freedom of choice. If I'm not hurting you and yours with my choices, then please don't worry about me.

It's pretty interesting that everyone is telling "maggie" to keep it to the sex. Look at how many comments were made on this weeks article. Now, Maggie, I do think that you should keep it to the sex issues. I think it's entertaining and "prolly" over ninety percent real. I don't attack you on your spelling nor do I attack anyone else on this site. However, after reading your article, I have to make a comment on this weeks material. I believe I have a pretty good idea on which direction your going to vote this election and that is your choice which I respect. However, if your going to write about politics and elections, instead of telling what Obama is "talking about doing" and grouping McCain with Bush, why don't you talk about the voting records of both, or lack there of. That is the only way we can see what politicians will actually do when elected. Remember we have a Congress right now that made several promises and haven't done a thing, on either side. If people want a one directional article about politics, go watch Michael Savage, Rush, or anyone on Cnn or mess nbc. I prefer looking up voting records on the issues i feel are important to the economy and the progress of the country. Someone earlier in this comment section said something about Sean Hannity, a conservative talkshow host. Tell me where else on a national level can you find a Conservative and a Liberal on the same show grilling guests on issues they both feel are important? Isn't that the real fair that we are looking to watch, if your a tv person?

By afanger @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 9:20 AM
does anyone else hate it when people claim to hate both candidates? i think people say this thinking both sides will relate to them. weak.

i vote republican because i have faith in our country, and our people. not our government.

i recieved this email yesterday and loved it.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

I'm voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe three or four pointy headed elitist liberals need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would NEVER get their agendas past the voters.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists don't have to hide from us over there, when they come over here I don't want to have any guns in the house to fight them off.

I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn't.
Makes ya wonder why anyone would EVER vote Republican, now doesn't it?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

go ahead liberals. pick it apart the best you can. looking forward to the response.

by the way maggie, whoever told you that the conservatives will embrace Palin for her situation with her daughter is correct. true Christians believe in forgiveness and embrace people going through hard times. "the religious right" will love her, and they already do.

By cardsbadabing @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 12:35 PM
"afanger", you hit it on the head w/ your copied email. As I stated before, I'm a Republican because I believe people who work hard shouldn't have to dole out for poeple who don't want to work and are lazy. As far as abortion, I'm morally against it but believe it's the woman and father's choice. Even though I don't believe in it don't tell someone what they can't do. Let's face it, a fetus can't survive out of the womb even after several months of gestation. To me it's not what people should base their vote on (especially since the states' decide even if Roe v. Wade would ever get overturned, which I don't believe will happen) but if that's your major issue then vote Democrat. However, I feel there are much larger issues at hand than this. To each their own, but I encourage everyone to read "afanger's" email above again and see if it hits home.

And Maggie, good work here. I love your columns for entertainment, but good writers and marketing advertisers job's are about generating buzz, get people to think, and react. Regardless of your readers politcal views you certainly riled everyone up here. I'm sure Timmy Mac loves the amount of traffic you're articles are bringing to the site, whether it's about threesomes or politics. Keep striking a nerve w/ the readers and you earn your paycheck! (side note: much like Howard Stern haters, if you don't like what Maggie has to say THEN DON'T READ IT!)

By afanger @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 12:44 PM

By Imaspy @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 2:33 PM
Yah, that post is right. There are no small business owners who are Dems. And yes, most Dems don't believe in God and regularly fuck horses. We have no interest in making money and would rather the government give us all we need. If we can't fuck horses then we engage in homosexual marriage ceremonies just about every weekend. The only reason we want to get out of Iraq is because we want the Repubs to look bad and we are just going to hope that nobody mean does anything bad to us. Actually we would like to dress the military branches in pastels and put them in charge throwing great big homo parties and most importantly bring back the cavalry so we can have lots of horses! We want to plant trees and flowers in every square inch of the country and don't think people should even be allowed to mow their lawns because they would hurt the grass. The only plants that can be hurt are pot plants which we will spend all day smoking. So that is the basic democratic platform in case any of you are interested. I just went to college to meet other gay men and horses and wasn't really into the science, politics and history that they were teaching. Who needs books when we have the good old USA work ethic to pull us through! I say Country First even if that means torturing innocent people and following a bronze age book literally.

OK, so sarcasm is fun sometimes too, right?

By jd @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 3:34 PM
Trooper and Imaspy,
Here is the problem with your argument. You say that if I don't believe in abortion, don't get one, or if I don't believe in gay sex, don't have it. But you don't want me to legislate my morality onto you. The problem is that we legislate someone's morality every day in this country. You are not allowed to murder someone who is walking down the street. Would you say to that "Don't believe in murder, don't commit one?" No. It is illegal. Someone's morality has been legislated. A 30 year old man is not allowed to have sex in this country with a 10 year old child. This is illegal. Someone's morality has been legislated.

I understand what you are trying to say, the problem is that it is extremely hypocritical. Because if you truly believed this, you would be throwing a fit that murder or underage sex is illegal in this country since someone's morality has been legislated. If you truly didn't want this, we would have a near lawless society. It's not plausible. Morality has to be legislated at some point.

The issue of abortion being right and wrong is a different debate (one that I'd gladly have) than this, but what I'm saying is that I've heard this argument (don't legislate your morality) many times, but it just doesn't hold water.

PS. Maggie I re-read the article, and you were right. You weren't criticizing the moral majority, just saying you didn't agree with them. You were criticizing the politicians who cater to them. So my apologies.

By ML @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 5:21 PM
must have been on the rag this week, your husbands friend could still have fucked you in the ass, would have made for a better article.

By Anti-Obamassiah @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 5:27 PM
You are correct on one thing, you do better not to talk about politics with only spending time to get a superficial hate-based idea on the majority of Americans. The moral majority, you put down are not hypocritical for supporting Sarah Palin and her family. Had Palin decided to do the easy thing and abort her son with Down syndrome and encouraged her daughter to abort her child, then she would be a hypocrit. No one in the Republican Party claims to be perfect. All forms of Christianity are based on the idea that no human is perfect. Moral character is shown on how people handle those incidents where they fall short of perfection. Palin is a great example of how to handle those events.
To wish for a return to the Clinton administration shows you might want to get out of bed for a moment and read a newspaper or watch a channel that is not included in the Cinemax lineup. Before Bush took office, the United States was attacked by al Qaeda four times during the period of 1993 up to the September 11 attacks. The inaction of Clinton is what gave Osama bin Laden the nerve to increase the scale and boldness of their attacks. When Clinton left office, he also left a recession without any budget surplus. The budget surplus was a ten-year projection not a reality. Bush inherited a recession, only made worse by the events of 9/11. During this period, Bush prevented any further attacks on American soild, which his Democrat opponents said time after time that more attacks were a certaintly. He also turned the economy around and, unlike Clinton's last year in office, Bush will be turning over an economy with actual positive GDP growth.
The moral majority that you claim to be hypocrits are the only chance this country has left at keeping any shred of decency in this country. Obama wanted to teach sex ed to kindergarteners, read the bill and it wasn't about protecting them from predators, it was about teaching age appropriate sex education to grades K - 12. There is no appropriate sex education for kindergarteners. Obama, who you say is driving the Bible Belt bus, also sees abortion as the most fundamental right granted by the Constitution. He opposed the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act from the Illinois Senate Floor on two occasions. This bill wasn't anti-abortion, it only required hopitals to provide medical care to babies born alive after an abortion attempt, instead of the current status quo in some states of leaving the child to die on its own. Don't buy into Obama's claim that these bills were anti-abortion. The Illinois bill and the federal bill contained basically the same wording and Barbara Boxer spoke in favor of the federal bill. (Boxer has the same 100% approval rating by the pro-abortion group NARAL as Obama has.)
For more on Obama and his morals that you claim should make Obama the dream of the moral majority, see www.antiobamassiah.wordpress.com. Under the catagory of Obama's past voting tendencies has the full story of Obama's objection to the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act and the whole site discusses Obama's extreme ideas that definately only makes him the dream candidate of warped "progressives" such as yourself.

By Imaspy @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 6:13 PM
JD: Sorry, that argument doesn't make sense to me at all. I don't want to legislate my belief system to control your life. The difference between your examples of moral legislation are that in the cases of murder and the rape of a child another person got hurt. So I am fine with laws that protect the individual. I know you are going to say that unborn babies are individuals too and I am fine with banning third trimester abortion. But the argument that a 1st and 2nd trimester baby is a human life just can't be proven in a court of law. That may not jive with your belief system but it is YOUR belief system, not everyone's. I'm not going to interfere with you or tell you what to do with your life any more than I want you to interfere with my life. I consider it child abuse to teach children that the earth is 10,000 years old and that the bible is true. To me it is complete rubish that someone in the bronze age made up out of the top of their head probably while doing some sort of natural phsyco drug such as mushrooms or even licking the back of a frog. Now we teach that shit to 5 year old kids and they believe it because they will believe anything. OK, fine. So long as you don't LEGISLATE that that nonsense be taught to my child I'm fine with it. Go ahead and fill your own kid's head full on fairy dust and daydreams about global floods and rivers of blood, I'll stay out of the way for ya.

By Imaspy @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 6:18 PM
Anti-Obama: Have you ever thought about the fact that Bush was in office for 9 months before the towers were hit and the heads of intelligence agencies at the time testified that the administration largely ignored all of their warnings about this event being imminent?

By jd @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 7:24 PM
Imaspy,
You have to do your homework. There is no science or medical knowledge that proves that a child's life begins at the THIRD trimester. In fact, all medical evidence indicates that life must begin at the very moment of conception. However, people have a hard time buying this because they can't SEE it.

Which leads me back to my original point. I've already gotten you to admit that abortion is wrong, in your case during the third trimester. If people were honest with themselves, and with all medical evidence available to us, they would see that abortion is wrong, and since this child is living from the moment it is conceived, at no point can abortion be justified.

It may take a while for us as a culture to admit this. Heck, look how long it took for us to finally admit slavery was wrong and abolish that. I just hope it happens sooner than later.

By cardsbadabing @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 7:27 PM
Imaspy- you believe way too much of what Michael Moore says. At least you gave JD some credit about 3rd trimester abortions. It seems to me that's all the Dem's are clinging to. AntiObama's talk about the recession Clinton left us in is true. While he was a gifted public speaker (who probably didnt need teleprompters) and did alot for foreign trade, his so called surplus left our country crippled. We would have been in much worse shape if Gore or any other Dem was elected instead of W. The economy was in a spiral and after 9/11 the bottom fell out. So vote for Obama, let him raise taxes to the middle class again and sink our economy along with bringing terrorism back to our soil.

By jd @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 7:28 PM
And by the way I said nothing about legislating the bible being taught in schools or anything you brought up, I'm strictly talking about abortion. I know people think that if you're against abortion you're for all that other stuff too, but that's not always true.

By vinnie @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 9:06 PM
stick to sex.......your not deep enough to talk politics my advice to you is watch the history channel t-nite a special on 9-11 then maybe "your generation" will get our being in the middle east but, then again you would probably give the rag heads a big-ol hug cause they were justified in incinerating women and CHILDREN-husbands and wives on 9-11 cause there "feelings" were hurt cause we believe in FREEDOM!!!!
