Random Golf Thoughts in a Tiger-less World
By Chris Hannis Tuesday, July 01, 2008

- Kenny Perry wins again in Michigan. In his post-victory interview, he re-iterated his stance that at 47, major victories aren’t of interest to him, but playing in his home state of Kentucky as a member of the Ryder Cup team is. He constructed a plan that would give him the best chance to qualify, and has executed that plan perfectly. By winning twice in the past 4 weeks, he has virtually locked up a position on this team. As most know by now, Kenny has been criticized for not trying to qualify for he US Open. But if majors aren’t important to him, and he’s at peace with not playing in the US Open, then who are we to criticize this move? His goal is to play in the Ryder Cup, and he’s achieved that goal. The phrase “Mind your own business” keeps popping into my head as I write this. It’s very similar to Tiger’s decision to play at Torrey Pines despite having an injured knee. If Tiger’s at peace with his decision to play because total major victories are of the utmost importance to him, then who are we to criticize? I’m confused…

- Did anyone know that the US Women’s Open was played this past weekend? No? That’s what I thought. This tour is in dire circumstances and I believe there are two reasons: 1) There is a significant amount of highly successful women golfers of Korean descent. Most of them don’t have telegenic personalities and most aren’t easy on the eye. I know this comes across as sexist and demeaning, but it’s the truth…period. 2) When is the last time we saw a duel on Sunday between two LPGA golfers? The 1998 US Women’s Open when See Ri “Tu” Pak beat Jenny Chuasiriporn in a Monday playoff? Wow, that was riveting stuff. This year, some 19 year-old named Inbee Park had a 5 stroke lead at the turn and it was over. Most of the contenders, including Paula Creamer, blew up on the first few holes to squelch any opportunity for excitement.

- Speaking of sexism, I’m calling out Johnny Miller as a raging sexist, but not the type you may expect. As harsh as he is on the PGA golfers, see Rocco Mediate, pool guy or Justin Leonard, Ryder Cup, he’s that easy on the women. It’s not fair. When Paula Creamer was blowing up with double bogey after double bogey on the front nine yesterday, Johnny said nothing. In fact, the harshest comments came from Dottie Pepper who went for the jugular by saying her problem is that “she tries too hard.” That’s some harsh stuff right there. If a contender in the US Open had blown up like that on Sunday at Torrey Pines, Johnny would have unleashed the hounds. But with the women, I guess it’s a simple shrug of the shoulders.

- Back to the Tiger-less Ryder Cup. If I’m Paul Azinger, I tell Tiger that the captaincy for this year’s deal is yours. I’ll do all the little stuff, the planning of dinners, etc., but you get to pick the 4 Captain’s Picks, set up the teams, and hang out with Michael Jordan in a golf cart, end of story. If you have the greatest golfer of all time available to make these decisions, you do it. Look at how successful Jack Nicklaus has been as Presidents Cup captain. As they say, Jack has cache, and the players listen. Tiger would do the same. Azinger need to step aside and be a co-captain in charge of the stupid, fluffy stuff that surrounds the Ryder Cup. This would not only make for great TV to have a 32 year-old captain, but would it be interesting to see how the players respond. I think we’d learn a lot about the super-sized egos of some of these players.
