On Monday the Cardinals announced that Tony LaRussa was coming back for the 2010 season. The Cardinals also announced that Mark McGwire would be the hitting coach next year. It has been two freaking days and I am already sick of hearing McGwire’s name. Enough already! I realize the amount of controversy that follows Big Mac around,
but I don’t care. I’m not here to talk about the past. I don’t care what he did. At this point the only thing I care about is how well he coaches the hitters of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010.
I am not saying what he did was right, I just don’t care anymore. I don’t care to argue whether he did it or not, I don’t care to hear an apology if he did it. Hell, maybe he should follow in OJ’s footsteps and write a book called If I Did It. Maybe that would satisfy everyone who is dying to know what happened. The past is the past, get over it. There was a time that I cared. There was a time where I felt duped. That all he accomplished was a sham. I got over it and so should you. It just doesn’t matter. A-Rod, unlike McGwire, actually tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and he’s playing in the World Series. Everyone forgave him, especially in New York. Manny Ramirez served a 50 game suspension this year and then helped the Dodgers get to the NCLS. No one cares about their indiscretions anymore. Why does everyone care about Mark so freaking much? Is it because he never apologized? Who am I to expect an apology from this guy? Should I expect Pam Anderson to apologize to me because when I was younger I didn’t know the difference between real and fake? He was in the entertainment business and he entertained. He did what he felt necessary to excel at his career.
This was a gutsy move by TLR. Would TLR have it any other way? He is going to do what he believes is going to help him win. He doesn’t care about anyone else’s opinion, just as long as Big Mac does his job. The Cardinals probably also believe
that bringing in Mark will help them sign Matt Holliday. Holliday trained with McGwire in the offseason. McGwire might be an added bonus, but Holliday is going to follow the money.
On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night Jimmy joked, “Did you hear that Mark McGwire was coming out of retirement? He’s going to coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. 162 games, that’s a lot. I don’t know where he’ll get the strength.” I hope McGwire apologizes for the past. Not because I feel like he should, but because it will make this stuff like this go away faster. Please Mark, I’m begging you, say something. Make the talk about the past actually a thing of the past. I fear if you don’t, this will never go away.
