The Cardinals let a rare one go last night as they were shut out for the first time since August 22. This is only their 3rd loss in the last 13 games. When they lose I get a very weird feeling because this team is not supposed to lose. It’s almost a feeling of disbelief. I sat in my seat in section 160 last night in awe of the game as it developed as the
Cardinals stranded runner after runner. I was really pushed over the top when even Albert Pujols looked human against Atlanta pitcher Jair Jerrjens. Albert went 0-4 last night with two strikeouts. Pujols hasn’t struck out since September 3 and hasn’t had a multiple strike out game since August 22. Pujols added to his 2 strike out night by committing an error.
Within the stadium it appeared to me that Matt Holliday scored in the bottom of the sixth, however they did not show a replay on the video boards for me to get a legitimate look at the play. From where I was it appeared that Atlanta catcher Brian McCann tagged Holliday high on the arm while Matt slipped his hand safely onto the plate. That would have tied at the time and probably give the Cardinals life to push to a victory last night. Bet hey, you can’t win every game.
The fans last night continued their sales pitch to help in the effort to keep Matt Holliday a Cardinal after this season. It seemed to me that Holliday was getting even louder ovations than Pujols. There is only one problem I can imagine when it comes to resigning Holliday. His agent is Scott Boras. Boras is a great negotiator and always gets his clients top dollar. After the way Holliday has been playing since he came to St. Louis, he is going to command ridiculous amounts of money on the open market. Even though Albert Pujols makes a sick amount of money himself, Holliday can probably get a larger contract that Pujols on the open market. So how can the Cards pay Holliday more than Albert Pujols? It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
Also, after he has looked like a slightly better than average pitcher in his last two starts, can we stop the Smoltz should be the third starter in the playoffs talk? I still believe that Smoltz will be most valuable as a set-up man in the playoffs and not as a starter. The Cards would be able to use him every game. Smoltz is very effective early in games, which is why I believe if he came out of the bullpen and only had to throw one inning it would a better use of his talent. I just loved that after the Cards acquired the big name that everyone instantaneously forgot about the year Joel Pineiro was having.
Pineiro is being overshadowed by the two legitimate Cy Young contenders that are also in this rotation. Put him on most other teams in the majors and Pineiro would be the ace of the staff this year. Pineiro is also a free agent after the season and the Cardinals have a lot of money tied up in Carpenter, Wainwright, and Loshe. Can the Cards afford to resign Pineiro with the money they already have into their pitching staff?
I also heard the two best quotes in all of baseball last night as I attended the game, and they both came from the same person. A friend of mine is in town from Chicago and he is a huge Atlanta Braves fan. He comes in town every year for Cards versus the Braves and he brings his significant other who is not a sports fan at all. On the way to pick them up at their hotel my friend calls and tells me that they are going to drive themselves down to the game because his SO said, “Maybe we should drive ourselves in case I want to leave at halftime.” Wow. Then as we are walking up to the stadium his significant other sees all the Albert Pujols shirts and jerseys that Cards fans are wearing and asks, “Who’s this Pee-JEWL-los guy that everyone seems to have on their shirt?” Awesome. Have you heard any quotes like that about sports? Leave a comment, tell me what they are.
